Bexar Roots Plant Company: Growing a Business with UTSA SBDC

When Maryssa Farias had the vision to create a mobile plant shop serving plant lovers across San Antonio, she turned to the UTSA Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for guidance on how to bring that idea to life.

With support from Business Advisor Lorna Adams, Maryssa received step-by-step assistance navigating the early stages of starting a business. The SBDC helped her understand entity formation, obtain an EIN, establish sales tax collection, open business banking accounts, and secure the permits needed to operate her mobile plant business.

Maryssa works a full time job during the week but uses this business as an escape and hopes to bring the happiness of plants to the community. Everything is transported safely so no plants arrive damaged, but once they arrive their trailer becomes a perfect little shop. 

They have many beginner friendly plants, so if you're looking to get some more greenery in your home, it's the perfect place to start. They have different sizes as well, from small succulents to large hanging plants. If you don't have a green thumb don't worry, they also have plant themed decor in shop as well!

What started as a retreat from the hustle of marriage, motherhood, and working in education quickly grew into a full-blown obsession and now, a business dedicated to helping others discover the joy of plant care. Maryssa, believes that plants have the power to transform a space, boost your mood, and bring a little bit of nature's magic indoors.

Maryssa is a full-time working mom of two, wife, and the plant-loving heart behind Bexar Roots Plant Company! In this mobile plant shop, Maryssa cares for every plant with love, creating a space where both new and seasoned plant parents feel supported.

Funding from the micro grant will go toward expanding their inventory to offer a wider variety of houseplants, plant care items, and accessories as well as their efforts to build community through collaboration with fellow small brands, deepening the local ecosystem of makers and entrepreneurs.
